Popcorn Ceilings Be Gone

We are about halfway through our first big project:  scraping the popcorn ceilings.

It's quite the task!  I wasn't super sure what to expect before we started working on it.  Would it be hard?  Would it be a mess?  Would we be able to do it ourselves?  The answer is yes, yes and yes!

As far as it being hard, it really did come down to the tools we were using.  We started out using plastic scrapers.  These were duct taped to the end of dowels so we could have better leverage and a longer reach.

We used these for the master and half of the guest bedroom.  It was exhausting.  Especially when going over the parts covering the drywall mud!

Finally, we decided it might be worth switching to metal scrapers.  What a difference!  Scraping the rest of the bedrooms with our upgraded tools was a breeze in comparison!

This project has been pretty messy, but we put down drop cloths which helped to contain the mess.  We also made sure to spray down the area we were working on with water to limit the dust.

Another tip:  if you are going to scrape a popcorn ceiling yourself, it's worth it to buy a respirator.  Even if you spray the ceiling with water, dust is inevitable.  I'm sure they will come in handy with our future projects, too.

Still in need of scraping:  the living room and dining room.  We hope to finish by this weekend so we will be ready to start painting!
